Completion of spring planting – total planting up 38% year on year

Landkom International PLC (AIM: LKI, "Landkom" or "the Group""), the Ukrainian producer of agricultural commodities, has completed its spring 2010 planting campaign, resulting in a 38% year on year increase in crops planted.

On 28 October 2009, Landkom stated it planned to plant approximately 8,000 hectares (ha) of spring crop in 2010, to supplement the 21,383ha of winter crop planted in the summer and autumn of 2009. Given improved operating efficiencies and cost structure improvements, on 1 March 2010 Landkom significantly increased the planting target to 18,000ha.

The Group has now completed its spring planting of 18,584ha well within the recommended planting window. This will give a total crop available for harvest of 39,967ha. This represents a year on year increase in planting of 38%. Of the 18,584ha spring crop, 18,109ha are cash crops which will be produced for sale and 475ha are non-cash crops which will be used within the Group’s livestock business as animal feed.

Of the cash crops planted this spring, a total of 7,875ha of maize was planted of which 2,000ha was in the central region and 5,875ha was in the western region. 3,522ha of spring wheat and 2,985ha of sunflower were planted solely in the western region. Of a total of 2,980ha of soybean, 2,790ha were planted in the western region with the remaining 190ha under irrigation in the southern region. In the southern region the Group also planted 165ha of spring barley and 582ha of mustard.

Of the 475ha of non-cash crops planted this spring, 220ha were sown in the southern region and 255ha were sown in the western region. Non-cash crops include corn silage, oats and sudan grass.

Including the winter planting, the Group has now planted 34,568ha of crops in the western region, 3,399ha in the southern region and 2,000ha in the central region.

The Group’s harvesting operations are likely to commence, in the southern region, by the end of June.

Vitaliy Skotsyk,

Landkom Chief Executive, commented:

"Our enhanced spring planting programme which will lead to an increase in total harvest area of 38% compared to last year is a key achievement for our farming team and demonstrates the progress we have made in improving Landkom’s efficiency and productivity. The increase in planting has been achieved with significantly less staff than last year which has led to a 50 per cent drop in the employees per ha compared to 2009.

"The widened spread of crops planted is in line with our strategy to reduce risk by increasing the variety of crops in cultivation, as well as helping working capital management and extending the use of our machinery throughout the farming season.

"The operational efficiencies and tight cost controls that have been achieved over the last seven months have enabled us to increase our planting significantly this season which will stand us in good stead for the coming harvest."
