Rape SeedVarieties such as Executive, Taurus and Artus are used by Landkom for rape seed production. These ensure the widest spread of planting and harvest dates which in turn allows optimum utilisation of machinery. It decreases risk of disease. Rape seed plays an important role as a break crop for cereal production and is also a valuable crop in the rotation in its own right. In the Ukraine rape seed is deemed a commercial crop which means it is not been impacted by government-imposed export restrictions. Of all the arable crops, rape seed is the most capital intensive in terms of sowing and harvesting requirements. It is also more risky compared to cereals, if not managed with skill and care. The tight sowing window for winter rape ends by early September in western Ukrainian conditions which gives time for the crop to develop before winter. After oil extraction, the protein-rich residues are made into oilseed cake for animal feed.
